Raper Creek Falls – Clarkesville, GA

This is a little late. I went on this hike on the last day of Spring. I took Godfrey to Raper Creek Falls Trail Loop near Clarkesville, Georgia. Most of the trail follows a forest service road, which makes it easier for Godfrey to handle. His arthritis medication seems to be working, so I decided to start with the scramble down to the falls, since it’s right at the beginning of the hike. It is steep and slippery, but I thought it was better to do it while he still had energy. I ended up slipping and going right into the water, but nothing was hurt except my pride!

The rest of the hike was easy. The trail is shaded and wide, and the morning temperature was nice even though the humidity was high. It was around 9:30 when we started, and the air already felt thick from a dew point near 70 degrees.

We stopped at a small bridge that crosses Raper Creek, and I let Godfrey take a dip in the water. After the bridge, there are no motor vehicles allowed, although there were still tire tracks that looked like they came from dirt bikes. The rhododendrons were blooming, which was nice.

I decided to cut the hike short. I explain this in the podcast audio and the YouTube video. Godfrey was also starting to slow down from the earlier scramble. It was all good as my concern turned out to be nothing more than my city born and bred paranoia.

What’s not part of the video or podcast is the little honey stand I stopped at on the way home. A couple pics are in the gallery above. I bought a couple of jars. It’s excellent stuff! The place is called MtnHoney and they have an honor system kiosk in front of their place. It’s a house where I guess they have the beehives. If you’re in the area don’t forget to stop by and pick some up!

It was a short hike, but a good one. Godfrey got muddy, I got wet, and we both made it back safe. Sometimes that is all that matters.
