Brasstown Bald & High Shoals Falls Trail – Hiawassee, GA

It’s a twofer hike on this trip. The first stop is Brasstown Bald in Hiawassee, Georgia, the highest point in the state. You can take a shuttle to the top, but I decided to hike up instead. The trail is paved, but is steep enough to get your heart rate up. The hike is about a half mile, and there are benches along the way if you want to rest.

At the top there is an observation area where you can see for miles. The return walk is easy, all downhill obviously. Once I reached the bottom, I hopped back in the Jeep to drive to my next stop, High Shoals Falls, about 25 minutes away, also in Hiawassee.

At the High Shoals Falls Trail he temperature was perfect, around 70 degrees. This trail is what you expect from a mountain trail. The trail is covered in leaves at this time of year and there are tons of gnarled roots so you need to watch your step. There is a sign right at the trail head. You need to head to the right of the sign. The arrows on the sign are not very readable.

It’s all downhill to two sets of waterfalls. The first is smaller but beautiful and the second one is pretty stunning (I used that word too much in my video) and larger. Both combined make this hike worth the effort. In fact I think this hike is perfect to bring a lunch and take a break at the larger falls before your hike back up to the parking area. That’s the one caveat. Since it’s all downhill to the falls that means it’s all uphill to your car. It’s a short 1.5 mile hike though and there are bridges throughout. Most anyone should be able to make this hike.
