Sourwood Trail to Nancy Town Falls at Nancy Town Lake – Mt. Airy, GA

I went out for a solo hike on the Sourwood Trail near Lake Nancy in the Chattahoochee National Forest. Godfrey stayed home this time because I wanted to give his hips a rest after our hike last week. It’s a short and manageable trail with a waterfall at the middle of the loop.

Parking is $5. You can pay via the app by scanning a QR code or use the envelopes for cash at the parking box. The trail begins shortly after passing a picnic area where there are bathrooms.

Early in the hike you’ll see a small waterfall right just before the turn onto Sourwood Trail. Past the creek and the falls is a sign pointing toward Nancy Town Falls. This is where the trail is a more traditional hiking trail.

From there it was an easy walk. The trail is rated moderate, but I think it should be rated easy. There were bridges over some small creeks and overall a very pleasant stretch walking beside a small brook. In summer this section would probably be full of spiders and bugs.

At Nancy Town Falls you’ll find a couple of benches where you can relax and enjoy the falls. The falls are easy to access and you can climb up close to them without too much trouble. I managed to climb higher for a better look, but the moss and leaves made everything too slippery to go farther.

There was a part of the forest that was particularly quiet. Pine needles covered the trail, which probably helped to absorb sound. You could barely even hear birds chirping.

Before leaving, I decided to try a side trail instead of walking the paved road back to my Jeep. The side trail loops around the opposite side of Nancy Town Lake. The lake views along this side are great and the walk is more enjoyable than the road. Unfortunately I discovered why this path is not part of the main loop. There is no bridge at the far end of the lake. I think you can follow another side trail down to cross the creek below the falls but I wasn’t interested in getting my feet wet today so I headed back the way I came.

Even with the slight detour, the entire hike was enjoyable. I think this will be a perfect trail for Godfrey. It has everything he enjoys. I will add it to his list.
